I appreciate your thoughtful and measured response. I do believe that the current situation in Iraq with regards to al Qaeda and the like is inhibiting attacks on our soil. We also are practicing interdiction on a very large scale internationally. This also has had a very positive effect on our Homeland Security.
Now for the bad news. Yes it is costly to fight this war. We all know that. But would you rather NOT spend the money to insure our Country's Security? I also believe that we must watchdog the politicans, the military and our current administration and demand accountability in all spending, not just the war. Our major success in getting over 10,000,000,000 people to defy the terrorists and vote is the beginning of the end for the dead enders and al Qaeda in Iraq. This thirst for freedom is contagious and will spread like wildfire in the Middle East and elsewhere. The current methodology is quite different than any other effort made prior to the current administration. To compare the successes in Iraq or Afhganistan to any other quest the U.S. has made to spread democracy is unbalanced from this point of reality. Of course, if you carefully review the processes that gained both El Salvador and Nicaragua freedom were fostered by U.S. intervention and support of the groups within those countires that were fighting for freedom. We weren't successful elsewhere due to the lack of commitment by the administrations in power then. Things have drastically changed in our current efforts and we now understand that the Invasion of Iraq was absolutey necessary to insure our own survival. Many things have come to light since the end of the initial conflict. And sure we made some mistakes, but if you consider the total picture, you find that we have done something that will cancel out the appeal of terrorism through the fostering of freedom and democracy. Each segment of the world requires a plan to achieve a unique culture based on the tenets of freedom and human rights. This is what happened in Afghanistan and is happening in Iraq. This also has brought other totalitarian and despotic governments to the realization that if they don't start offering a measure of this freedom to their own people, their days are numbered. It is also my belief that we need to wait and see the effect before naysaying the effort.
